Examined in this article is how the people’s memories and honoring of the so-called “Saeng Yuk-shin(生六臣)” figures, people who remained loyal to king Danjong and managed to survive the massacre that killed most of the officials who tried to save him, were reinforced. Also examined is how the related vestiges were newly established as historical sites in the 19th century, in order to determine the historical meaning of the sites related to the loyal vassals of King Danjong.
After Danjong’s status as a king was reinstated during the reign of king Sukjong, they came to be considered as men of loyalty and righteousness, but this particular group of people lacked inner similarities that connected the Six figures Who Died(“死六臣, Sa Yuk-shin”) trying to take Danjong’s revenge upon King Sejo.
So, the tablets of the Six figures Who Survived(“生六臣”) were enshrined at the Changjeol-sa/彰節祠 shrine just like the Six figures Who Died were. Also, 『Saeng Yuk-shin Habjib(生六臣合集, Collective works of the Six Figures Who Survived)』 was published in order to create an internal bond between the six of them. At the same time, their descendants and local residents cooperated to rebuild or renovate the existing sites and structures. As a result, Weon Ho(元昊)’s Gwan’ran-jeong Yu’heo-bi(觀瀾亭遺墟碑, a tablet remembering the vestige of the Gwan’ran-jeong pavilion) was erected, and Jo Ryeo(趙旅)’s Chae’mi-jeong(采薇亭) pavilion was renovated.
