Reinstating the honor of the late King Danjong(who was addressed only as Nosan-gun, his pre-enthronement title, after his abdication), and also those of the ‘Six honorable vassals', had been considered a rather sensitive issue to be discussed by the Kings of the later days, so there had not been any discussion of the matter whatsoever for years. Yet coming into the reign of King Sukjong, the honor of those persons was suddenly reinstated, so it seems there has been a certain change of perspective upon this matter on the very King's part. King Sukjong showed some interest in the matter of Nosan-gun and his loyal six vassals, but initially did not support the idea of restoring the late King's honor. Then, in the 17th year of his own reign he suddenly decided to reinstate the honor of the Six honorable vassals, and in his reign's 24th year, against the general objection of the officials, he finally announced the restoration of Nosan-gun's long-lost honor. The King was at the center of the decision-making throughout the entire process, and the heated discussions among the officials turned out only to have served as an official justification for the orders' implementation led by the King himself. The change of King Sukjong's position in this matter was due to the political situations at the time. The political factions inside the government were experiencing rapid power-shifts, so the King needed to stand his ground, secure the loyalty of his own vassals, and also establish the crown-prince as an authoritative figure. The restoration of Danjong's honor was a part of his efforts aimed at such goal. As a result, the image of the King leading the officials in doing the right and moral thing was established, and was going to have a huge influence upon the later Kings as well.
