This study aims to explain how colonial memory forms narrative in the Kim Gwangsik’s novel, 『The Colony』.
In 1950s Kim Gwangsik published short stories about the alienation of the city people after war, but in 1960s he published stories about his own colonial experience. Especially in 『The Colony』 he attempted to compose his contemporary self through the reproduction of his colonial memories.
In the first half of 『The Colony』 the main character, Han Dongsa, goes to Manchuria in oder to desert the student soldiers corps. The second half of the novel mainly shows his experience in Manchuria. The main characters’ love story is elevated to nationalism based on this storyline.
Nationalism is the main concept of this novel, and it is used to lead narrative. However it fails to be consistent in showing the narrative of nationalism by adding postwar humanism and other concepts.
