The purpose of this paper is to present grammatical features of Cinene, a previously unstudied Chadic language spoken in Northeastern Nigeria, as well as to define its position on the basis of lexical and grammatical comparison with the two closely related languages, Glavda and Guduf. While the latter two languages have been classified by Newman (1977/1990) as belonging to the Mandara group of the Biu-Mandara branch of the Chadic family, Cinene remains still unclassified, which the following two factors seem to be relevant to: 1. the lack of linguistic data of Cinene and 2. strong lexical similarities between Cinene and Glavda so that one might regard the former as a dialect of the latter (see Wolff 1974/75a - it refers also to a tight linguistic and historical relationship between Cinene and Guduf), i.e. no need would arise for its classification. In this sense, this paper is intended to be an analytical description of grammatical data of Cinene for the purpose of dicussing classificatory issues from different but complementary perspectives.
Following a brief introduction to Cinene, the second section deals with a lexical comparison between Cinene and Guduf/Glavda. This serves at the same time for a recapitulation of Wolff's work mentioned above. The third section is a grammatical sketch of Cinene, providing its salient linguistic characteristics from phonology to morphosyntax, where a comparison is also made among the three languages in terms of their grammatical features.
In the last section I summarize and evaluate the results of the preceding sections in terms of the following logical possibilities for defining the position of Cinene: 1. Cinene as a dialect of Glavda, 2. Cinene as a dialect of Guduf, 3. Cinene as a separate (hybrid) language.
