The Position of Jakarta’s Dialect and Influences to Indonesian SocietyIm, Young-Ho(Woosong University) Having different position to other local dialects and Malay languages Betawinese language or Jakarta’s dialect has an important and distinctive role in the advancing of Indonesian. The position is determined, not only because of the language internal structure-due to its unique history, but also because it happens to be located in the capital city of the Republic of Indonesia. Along the way, in addition to the pride it gives to the speakers, Betawinese language is also able to draw the interest of a number of experts, both from Indonesia and other countries. Even though this Jakarta’s dialect is not an official language in Indonesia, its impacts are tremendous on account to its strategic place of usage, that is the capital city of the country. Therefore, unwillingly, it becomes the reference for other dialects throughout the country. Moreover, most of the mass media, both electronic and printed, are located in Jakarta, consequently the dialect disseminates fairly easy. The national movies, which are usually produced in Jakarta, also help to socialize the language since they use the local dialect in their dialogues. Since the most important factor in this matter is that Indonesian language does not have the oral language model, herein Jakarta’s dialect can meet the needs of such language model. Finally, the most significant agent to spread the language is the youth, because they use it daily. Therefore, they must realize the potency of their own language and culture, so that they can embrace it in their arts projects or activities, especially those that use language as media of expression, such as literature, performing arts, and so on.
