The main aim of this paper is to survey some typological characteristics of indefinite subject marking (alias 'impersonals') in Chadic. In terms of formal characteristics of marking indefinite subject, contemporary Chadic languages may be divided mainly into two groups, depending on whether or not the language employs special pronouns (alias 'fourth person') to express the indefinite subject; while some languages use special pronouns, many languages which do not have such pronouns seem to mainly use lexical items denoting 'person/people' or 'man' for this purpose. Drawing on data from 17 Chadic languages (West and Central Chadic), this paper presents the forms and the distribution of these strategies in terms of grammaticalization, and discuss whether they have any implications for Proto-Chadic. In terms of their functions on the other hand, indefinite subject constructions have in many cases been described as having passive meanings. But since indefinite subject constructions are not a syntactically valence-decreasing operation like passivization, they are not to be regarded as passives per se. This issue is also briefly addressed in this paper.
