Tense, aspect, and mood (TAM) as grammatical categories belong to those areas in the grammar that are not easy to understand and deal with, due to their subtle meanings as well as multifunctionality. In Chadic linguistics, they were one of the most prominent and hotly debated topics, especially in the 1970s and 1980s. The scholary discussions at that time were, however, mostly centering on diachronic issues such as reconstruction of TAM categories presumed to have existed in Proto Chadic and their historical development in contemporary Chadic languages. Furthermore, most of the research focused on formal aspects of individual TAM categories rather than semantics ones, thereby ignoring what was significant to define them. And since 1990s onward, TAM was no more an active topic in Chadic linguistics.
Thus, this study aims at reviving interests in this issue by exploring the TAM systems of 8 languages selected from the West and East branch of the Chadic family. The main points of discussion are as follows:
1. Defining the nature of the individual TAM categories in Chadic from a general linguistic and typological point of view
2. Typology of TAM systems in West and East Chadic languages
3. Finding diachronic relationship between the West and East Chadic languages in terms of TAM systems
