The Chadic language family, which is a member of the Afroasiatic phylum, consists of ca. 150 languages spoken in the west, south and east areas of the Lake Chad in West Africa. The most well known Chadic language is Hausa, which is, as one of the biggest lingua francas in Africa, spoken by up to 40 million speakers mainly in the regions of northern Nigeria and southern Niger. Other Chadic languages are, however, mostly minority languages with less than 50,000 speakers: the speakers of the Hausa language outnumber those of other Chadic languages all together. As regards linguistic description, there are still many Chadic languages that need systematically be analysed und fully described.
The aim of this paper is to examine and characterise linguistic features of Chadic languages by using 11 typological properties listed in Heine(2004) that he used for his typological study based on 98 African sample languages. The properties used are (1) labiovelar stops (39%¹?), (2) implosive stops (35%), (3) lexical and grammatical tones (76.5%), (4) ATR-based vowel harmony (39%), (5) verbal derivational suffixes (77%), (6) nominal modifiers follow the noun (85.5), (7) semantic polysemy 'drink/pull, smoke' (85%), (8) semantic polysemy 'hear/see, understand' (79%), (9) semantic polysemy 'animal, meat' (39.5), (10) comparative constructions based on the Action Schema (X is big exceed/passes Y) (90), and (11) noun 'child' used productively to express diminutive meaning (53%).
The result of this study shows that the Chadic languages generally confirm their typical linguistic 'Africanness'; the Chadic languages also have all the 7 linguistic properties that occur relatively frequently (with over 50% occurrence) in other African languages (i.e. Heine's 98 sample languages).
This paper deals also with some other linguistic characteristcs typically occurring in Chadic, including (1) prenasalised consonants, (2) lateral fricatives, (3) vowel systems, (4) ICP (Intransitive Copy Pronoun), (5) 1PL. Inclusive/Exclusive, (6) pluractional verb, (7) gender, and (8) word order. Finally, a lexical list (Swadesh 100-word list) is provided for evaluating the lexical affinities among Hausa(West Chadic) and Guduf(Biu-Mandara) along with Proto-Chadic.
