Yi-Bukmyeong is the writer who represents labor or laboring people in the novel. There are 'laboring people' such as labor classes in city, unemployed workers, and farmers cultivating slash-and-burn field in his novel. However, the meaning of 'laboring person' has changed in his novel in the period of Japanese occupancy.
Yi-Bukmyeong has worked as a laborer from the time when Noguchi-Konzern built Chosun nitrogenous fertilizer factory in Heungnam. He figured labors who were active in participating in a labor movement based on his experience that time. This shows the experience of Yi-Bukmyeong, which he struggled for improving poor working conditions and acquiring legitimate rights with laborers. Therefore, the concept of 'labor' in this time was opposed to capital.
However, after Yi-Bukmyeong was dismissed from the factory, he wrote the process of laborer level formation with the development of modern industrial city in his novel. This time, Yi-Bukmyeong started writing novels getting out of short stories. But, he tended to compromise with reality due to the pain from being unemployed. Therefore, the concept of 'labor' in this time was not opposed to capital, but narrowed to way of life.
Around 1937, getting a job in Noguchi-Konzern, Yi-Bukmyeong gave up resisting and started compromising with reality. 'Labor' was opposed to nature in novels published in this period. It was interpreted as the action which showed the greatness of mankind against the power of nature. Novels published in 1940s degenerated into pro-Japanese novels describing persons who labor faithfully for the country positively. In this way, losing the historicity and sociality of labor, the novel of Yi-Bukmyeong lost its wellness.
