In Absalom! Absalom!, we finds the images of revenge inflicted in the cultural traits and conflicts of a patriarchal family, which Thomas Sutpen’s ‘design’ exposes. Sutpen’s revenge, which originates from the affront that he suffered in his boy, means to be a rich, powerful Southern gentleman; to vindicate an equal right and opportunity of every poor boy who has a dream. But his ambition toward success drives him to his moral blindness. In his world his wives and sons are chosen or discarded by the usefulness of his ‘design’. He motivates one son to murder his mixed-blood son, which eventuates in fratricide. He also despises the very lower class that mirrors his own origin. Paradoxically his revenge focuses on reproducing the artificial barriers of race or class; not on trying to get rid of those barriers, but rather on founding a dynasty that embodies his social superiority. Finally his design stained with distorted revenges, proves only a morally twisted Southern fantasy. And his fall or the Southern collapse in the larger cultural context seems to be morally inevitable.
