The political meaning of Hamlet’s revenge can be interpreted by completely different perspectives. If his revenge is mirrored in the conservative view of Christian doctrine, we can find the suffering and destruction of the revenger who violates God’s will, and the recognition of God’s providence and the restoration of moral order. Especially, his destruction seems to be inevitable because Hamlet himself becomes the object of revenge after he kills Polonius by mistake. However, if we focus on the cynicism and resistance of the established order which Claudius represents, Hamlet’s revenge can be read as a political text which conveys the subversive desire and the skepticism of the unjustly twisted ruling order.
This complicated and split political meaning is ironically enforced by the division of Hamlet’s inner desire. On the one hand Hamlet is obsessed by the desire for revenge, and on the other hand he is obsessed by the desire to flee from the revenge. Hamlet’s dependence on “readiness” in the last Act reflects more serious political perception. If he has the conviction that his revenge against Claudius can change the Danish society, Hamlet’s revenge represents the subversive desire against the established order. But, if it is impossible, his revenge is just the repetition of the existing order. In Act 5, he knows about the truth of Claudius’ crime, but he doesn’t show the vengefulness any more. This disinterested attitude paradoxically speaks of the difficulty of changing the ruling order “out of joint.”
