Absalom! Absalom! reproduces the cultural traits and conflicts of a patriarchal family awash with contradictions in Yoknapatawpha county, a meaningful parody of the Old Southern society after the Civil War. Especially the narrators in the novel are continuously searching for the explanations that might disclose the irrevocable destiny of Sutpen’s family－the fratricide, incest, miscegenation, and collapse－bred by the culture of patriarchal plantation based on a slave economy. Indeed, the success for which he longs is to be a rich, powerful Southern gentleman－to own a large estate, many slaves, and build a dynasty－which is also the symbol of his “grand design.” But the true nature of his success is only a morally twisted Southern ideal, which forces his family to fall into ‘boundary situations.’ The Sutpen family are like fluid essences strongly linked to the power and to the body of patriarch, which can be explained in a wider cultural context.
