Increasing regulatory demands for clean air and better fuel economy have led to the greater penetration of diesel passenger cars equipped with diesel particulate filters [DPF]. This in turn has increased the vehicle industry’s need for more durable and cost effective filter system solutions. To help address this need, the engine dynamometer study presented in this paper examines catalyzed Corning DuraTrap® AT filters tested in the underbody configuration for the development of a Euro Ⅳ application. The main objective of this study was to develop a good, fundamental understanding of the system behavior under different, relevant conditions and to use those learning’s for the development of a robust operating strategy. With the understanding that thermal management and soot estimation are key elements of an operating strategy, we will discuss the filter temperature response during controlled and uncontrolled regeneration events as a function of changes in exhaust flow rate, filter inlet temperature, soot loading amount and soot loading type. In addition, the filter backpressure response is analyzed as a function of soot loading level, soot loading type and exhaust flow rate. Finally, the observations made on engine bench will be discussed with respect to their implications to the vehicle application
