As one of the research works on the pre-modern view of boundary and the cognition on self and others in Korea and Japan, the study reviewed the cognition on self and other, that is the cognition on foreign land, in Joseon era. The subject for analysis was the “Drawing of Amrita”, which is called 《Drawing of Ullambana Sutra》, currently kept in Zondenzi, Mieken Matsuzaka. The “Drawing of Amrita”, called buddhistic drawing of hell, is structured by upper part(heaven), middle part(human), and bottom part(hell). Especially the portrait of hell and Yukdojesang in bottom part well describes the custom in Joseon era. On the other hand, the main stream of buddhistic historians display a trend to focus on the exorcism in middle part. Thus, this study aimed to look into the pre-modern view of boundary revealed in the custom and cognition on self and other in Joseon era through an analysis on the bottom part of “Drawing of Amrita”. Especially, 《Drawing of Ullambana Sutra》 drawn in 1591 has an interesting figure. It has a depict of a westerner in a frilled shirt in the hell of bottom part. Also, there are Japanese people right beside the westerner who is longing for a drop of amrita from the starving demon in the hell. “Drawing of Amrita” which portrays a strange westerner and Japanese in the hell implies the view of cognition on foreign land of civilians in Joseon era. It can be inferred that the civilians already had contacts with westerners even before the “Imjinweran”, Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. “Drawing of Amrita”, 《Drawing of Ullambana Sutra》 gives an evidence that Joseon contacted westerners earlier than 1591, the year it was drawn, thus refuting current theory that tells the first contact was in early 17th century. Also, this study discusses the possibility that Joseon started to carry out cultural exchanges with western countries in middle and late 16th century.
