In this paper we saw the establishing process of the Geojedo P.O.W. camp and the separate commitment, the massacre, the release and the exchange of the prisoners in turn.
I would like to suggest a few subjects for future researches on the camp. First, we should closely analyze the ‘P.O.W. camp’ policies of the South and the North Korea during the Korean War. It is also necessary to investigate the prisoners interned in other areas than Geojedo, including Daegu, Pusan and North Korea.
Second, researches on prisoners’ life at the camp. So far we only have limited information on the camp itself and a few incidents therein. We need to make interviews with live prisoners as well as persons with indirect experiences of the camp. Gathering unrevealed records about the camp is also necessary for more systematic researches.
Third, in-depth researches are needed with regard to the alleged germ warfare or massacre in the camp. Until now, there has been no evidence that the prisoners were put into the germ warfare experiments. However, we still need to make it clear whether the prisoners were justly handled under the Geneva Conventions, and whether the U.N. Forces or North Korean troops massacred the prisoners.
Fourth, other research subjects should include the prisoners‘ escape from the camp to mainland or other countries, the intelligence operations of North Korea in the camp, and the communication system between the prisoners and civilians.
Until now the camp has been more a theme for artists or authors than a subject for researchers. It is time to excavate and gather documents and materials scattered over the countries including the United States, China, and Russia, and make historical and scientific approaches to the camp.
