Most of researchers have an opinion that Toegye thinks Dosanseodang(陶山書堂) as an perfect place for self-cultivation. When paying attention to Toegye's poetry closely, we can find out that it is necessary to correct the opinion that Toegye recognizes Dosanseodang as an ideal hermitage place for self-cultivation. This assertion is grounded on the lots of lines in Dongjaegamsa(洞齋感事) and Dosanjabyeong(陶山雜詠), in which shows that Dosanseodang is not an optimal place for self-cultivation.
The In-going consciousness in his works becomes more intensive by the order of Dongjaegamsa, 7-syllabic poems of Dosanjabyeong, 5-syllabic poems of Dosanjabyeong. As there is no close relationship between the intensiveness of the in-going consciousness and the actual physical space, it is reasonable to approach to that by way of a concept of layer. In view of the concept, the layer of 7-syllabic poems of Dosanjabyeong is higher than that of Dongjaegamsa, and the layer of 5-syllabic poems of Dosanjabyeong is higher than that of 7-syllabic poems of Dosanjabyeong. Though the layer of 5-syllabic poems of Dosanjabyeong is highest, Toegye does not have a sense of self-contentment. He thinks that by way of reading life, and an outlook of Cheoninhabil(天人合一) and Murailche(物我一體), 'life of spontaneity' can not be accomplished.
Toegye tries to change the recognition on the limitation of the hermitage space. It is shown clearly in intention to reduce the sense of out-going consciousness. However, it can not be said that trial guarantees a success. He considers that his out-going consciousness is not fully reduced in Dosan, and then as an alternative plan for that he comes to take a reading life which is accomplished in the course of 'life of spontaneity'. But, the effectiveness of the reading does not last for a long time. As he has to return to the incomplete hermitage space after the reading, he can not help leading the reading life consecutively. Due to that reason, he can not stop the reading.
