'Sadko' is the most famous Novgorod starina, dated back to 12<SUP>th</SUP> century. In the "mercantile epic", we are told how Sadko the singer has become rich, having won a wager with the Novgorod merchants that there was a fish with "golden fins" in the Novgorod lake Il'men. The content of the story is fantastic: during one of his business-trip, Sadko visits the kingdom of the "Sea King", who is so pleased with his singing that he wants to give him one of his daughters in marriage, etc.
The storytelling, which deviates from the custom of textual literature and multi-uses archetypes of literary tradition, is in the limelight of today's narrative as a new kind of art. The Novgorod bylina 'Sadko' is one of the best examples. The Starina is full of original features, which do not occur in the bylina tradition.
This paper focuses on the art of storytelling of Novgorod starina 'Sadko', to find various reasons of how the story of 'Sadko' is successfully handed down up to now and what the main reason of such a long tradition is. The contents of starina 'Sadko' become more and more productive while going through the various mass communications media, such as poems by Aleksei Tolstoy and Osip Mandelshtam, a movie and an animation by Aleksei Putushko, an opera by Rimsky-Korsakov, and Ilia Repin's painting. The main reasons of the various modifications are as follows. At first, the main body of the story is retreated following the characteristics of genres and media. Secondly, the plot and the motifs are processed by the socio-political mechanism. Thirdly, the archetype is transformed by the use of economic and commercial purpose.
