This study is to outline the state and characteristics of the Dwelling in Mahan?Paekje found in the West-North provinces of Chungnam to understand the features in space design of residential areas and settlements in the region. Up to now the number of residential areas found in 8 heritage regions has reached over 150 in the West-North provinces of Chungnam, all of which date back to Paekje during the Mahan.
These residential areas are located on the coast or by the rivers at about 20m~30m above sea level on hillsides, indicating that residential areas in those days were located in the most preferable places for productive activities, particularly fishing or gathering. In terms of ground plans, square types were usually used during earlier period and gradually rectangular types were adopted to a similar proportion between the two. As for size, middle and large types were mostly used in the third century, and in the 4th century and later on the size got smaller. Fireplaces for cooking were originally used without utilities or with kitchen ranges and then Korean floor heating system was introduced. These features found in the residential areas coincide with those seen in the residential areas in Hoseo region in the 3rd-5th century, which was reported by previous studies.
In regard to the chronicles, the residential heritages belonged to about 2rd-7th century; Gagokli, Gijili, Bujangli Eonamli, heritages to approximately the 2rd and 4th century; Wendangli heritages to the 4th and 5th century; Namjangli and Namjang heritage inside a newhousing development district was found to have built in the 6th-7th century. In view of cultural content of the residential areas in the mid 4th century, Mahan's cultural tradition and Paekje's new culture were mixed, suggesting that then Paekje was expanding its power over to this region. Circumstance and surroundings during the period are reflected in those residential heritages as they are.
When it comes to the features of space design in settlements heritages, economic activities, funeral and conveniences for daily lives were taken into account under deliberate schemes for section allotment and placement of utilities. The space design and placement assume advanced types of settlement structures in that a settlement contains tombs, storages and residences which are designed and placed in separate sections.
