The late 7th century is a meaningful period in Korean history. The alliance of Shilla and Tang conquered Baekje in 660 and Kokuryo in 668. Shilla integrated the old territory of Baekje in 671, and Balhae was founded in the old territory of Kokuryo in 698. Associated with the issue of periodization the recognition of this fact can be divided into two viewpoints.
One viewpoint understands the period as Shilla's integration of Baekje and sees the following period as the beginning of the medieval society. Shilla only integrated the old territory of Baekje that was south of the Imjin River in consequence of the International War of East Asia in the 7th century. Since then, Shilla presented a typical ruling system of the medieval society in Korean history by establishing the centralized aristocracy-bureaucrat system.
The other viewpoint understands the period as Shilla's unification of the Three Kingdoms and sees the following period as the succession of ancient state. Shilla unified the Three Kingdoms in 676 by making north of Imjin River as a buffer zone in consequence of the International War of East Asia in the 7th century. Shilla since then strengthened the centralized territory-state system in succession of ancient state.
These two disparate viewpoints recognizing the late 7th century Korean history were also related to the logic of a modern colonial historical view. The issue has already been inherent in Korean history and a theme of controversy for a long time, so it is complicated to reach an agreement into a particular viewpoint. It is a key subject, however, to share the recognition and to improve the research by continuation of controversy.
