This thesis is to examine out the revision aspects of Hyul-e-nu(Tears of Blood), and to confirm the original text of the work which is basis for the studies on the early Korean modern literature. To do so, a comparative study is carried out on the various versions of the work published after the Korean Liberation and its source work. First, the Hyul-e-nu(Tears of Blood) which is serialized in Mansebo and the Hyul-e-nu(Tears of Blood) which is published in a separate volume in Gwanghakseopo are compared. And then, the import of the revision is analyzed by the comparative study on the Gwanghakseopo version and the original version published in Dongyangseowon. After proceeding such textual criticism, the various versions of the work published in some publishing company after the Korean Liberation are examined out.
According to the result of this study, it is confirmed out that the original text of Hyul-e-nu(Tears of Blood) is the Mansebo serialized version(1906), the Gwanghakseopo version, and the Dongyangseowon original version. There is a marked difference between the Gwanghakseopo version and the Dongyangseowon version. There are internal and external elements for that difference. The external element is the oppressed surroundings in the fields of speech and publication resulting from Japan’s governing by the bayonet after the collapse of the Daehan Empire. The internal element is Lee In-Jik’s political ambition and his way of getting on in the world.
The stylistic features of the three source books are examined out in the detailed study on sentence, passage and dialogue, Chinese characters, and concluding endings. From the Mansebo version to the Gwanghakseopo version, the mixed style of Korean and Chinese characters is changed into exclusive style of Hangeul. The parts of speech of the figures in the Mansebo version and the Gwanghakseopo version become apart from the passage. Arriving at the Dongyangseowon version, they are used together, not to be divided. The spelling method of Chinese characters in the Mansebo version employs a mixed method in Korean, Chinese, and Japanese. In case of the concluding endings, the mixed use of ‘~Da’ and ‘~Deora’ is changed into the frequent use of ‘~Deora’ in the Gwanghakseopo version.
Examining out the source text of the Hyul-e-nu(Tears of Blood), a lot of the works take the Gwanghakseopo version as the source text. And some texts take the Dongyangseowon original version as the source text. and particularly, there is a text in which the serialized version in Jeguksinmun.
