The purpose of this study is to find out the identity of women in the modern Korean novels-the novels in enlightenment period of Korean history.
I'm going to introduce some information of the time like the import of Catholicism, Dong-hak Movement(the movement of folks for their rights), Kye-hwa-sa-sang(the progressive ideas to import western cultures and the modern thought of the west) by the progressive scholastic groups, and the development of the practical science. These things can help us understand the social situation and how the social situation affected the Korean literature, expecially the modern Korean novels.
Especially novels like 『Hyul-ui-noo(l907)』, 『Ja-yoo-jong(l910)』, 『Chu-wuhl-sek(l912)』 are going to be mainly studied to explain how the movements for women's rights were going on in these works.
The novel 『Hyul-ui-noo』 deals with the matter of a woman's free will concerning marriage, education for women enlightenment, equality between men and women, and even women's superiority to men. 『Ja-yoo-jong』 more strongly promotes women's rights and the necessity for women's education. The notion that we must learn the Korean language which is a lot easier than Chinese to make our nation more civilized and be independent of China is also introduced. The necessity for women's organizations to have more power in society as well as the resistance to being domesticated is talked about. These things are the main subjects of 『Ja-yoo-jong』.
They also insist that women have equal rights, and from this aggressive expression, we can notice the origin of feminism. Furthmore, it even asserts that it's not for men, but for women to be responsible for educating their children.
The plot of 『Chu-wuhl-sek』 is a little bit complicated, but it has some aesthetic things in itself. Chung-im breaks up with Young-chang and becomes married to another man by her parents' order. But the procedure itself and that she refuses to get married to another man and her hardship derived from this refusal is very meaningful. It also deals with the procedure of finding her identity. It criticizes the bad aspects of the Korean marriage tradition and advocates free dating and marriage rather than the tradition of arranged marriage and the necessity for educating women, and the responsibility of women to fight for their rights.
Until now I've thought about the modernization in Ke-hwa-ki (the enlightenment period of Korean history) novels and the matter of women's identities. Those novels are not so perfect sources of information about women because they had various difficulties derived from the traditional Korean society. But at the same time, those novels are very important because these matters about women were very crucial for women themselves. When we see it from a feminists' view it's just the first step in recognizing women's rights and identities and it was innovative and necessary at that time.
