This study aims to review three different versions of 〈Wanwolhyemaengyeon〉, Gyujang-gak Version, Yonsei University Version and Nakseonjae Version and to examine the mutual relationship of the three versions. Although 〈Wanwolhyemaengyeon〉 is a work in 180 volumes, this study will scrutinize the characteristics of them.
At first, I examined the difference among manuscripts of three versions and found Yonsei Version was the copy of Nakseonjae Version or similar series. Yonsei Version has many mistakes, for example, misreading or omitting some words.
Secondly, I examined all the volumes of Gyujang-gak Version and Nakseonjae Version and found they had totally the same story with the same figures and incidents. The two versions had very close relationship because the contents and the structure of spacing words.
The viewpoint of the circulation of family novel can solve the question of preceding version between Gyujang-gak Version and Nakseonjae Version. The fact that 〈Wanwolhyemaengyeon〉 had characteristics of rental books is very important because family novels had close relationship with the development of book rental shops. This viewpoint let us know Nakseonjae Version was the faithful copy of Gyujang-gak Version or similar series. The record that there were many rental books for rich women and that a family novel with hundreds volumes was rental books can tell us the high possibility that Gyujang-gak Versions was rental books.
In summary, the royal palace collected Gyujang-gak Version or similar series and the royal palace faithfully copied them. The result of the copy was Nakseonjae Version. Later, someone made Yonsei Version through copying of Nakseonjae Version or similar series. As the result, we can find Gyujang-gak Version is the oldest version of 〈Wanwolhyemaengyeon〉. Nakseonjae Version is the next version and Yonsei University Version is the last one.
