Since Hansberry read the first draft of A Raisin in the Sun to her husband’s friends in 1957, various versions of stage and film scripts of the play as well as its film versions have been produced, published, and shown. This paper’s main purpose is to show that the various versions are different in a way that their differences can have a significant impact on the understanding of the play’s main theme, racial segregation. For the purpose, the paper compares two stage-script versions published in 1958 and 1988, a film-script version published in 1992, and three film versions made in 1961, 1989, and 2008. From the comparison, it is found that the differences between these versions are the result of the revision, deletion, or restoration of seven incidents Hansberry originally prepared and that the incidents are all related the racial segregation theme. The paper concludes that, since the differences can have a critical impact on the understanding of the main theme, not only the information must be considered in selecting the play’s text and film but also it must be exposed to students.
