The Comparison of the reign of Hezekiah in the Ⅱ Kings18-20 and Ⅱ Chronicler's 29-32.
In the Bible there are two kinds of histories. One is Deuteronomic History and the other is Chronicler's History. These two different histories have duplicate written materials.
In terms of structure, arrangement and contents, there are similarities and also dissimilarities. Especially the reign of kings has been written and arranged through different materials and ways each other.
In this aspect the reign and reformation policy of Hezekiah also have similar and dissimilar materials.
(= In this aspect it had been written also through the same and different materials about the reign and refomate policy of Hezekiah.)
Thus I want to know and display how similar and dissimilar these two histories are.
I want to explain Why there are differences and what are the differences between similar and dissimilar of the two histories in terms of the Structure and the Emphasis. As the explaining of the problems, we can avoid the prejudged understanding and the one way reading of the Bible, and then we can approach better and right understanding of the Bible.
I am going to emphasize three points in the difference between similar and dissimilar of the two materials, Deuteronomic and Chronicler's history.
First one is whether there is the interpretation of the fall of northern kingdom Israel before the reign Hezekiah or not. Second one is that the War of the Judean King of Hezekiah and Assyrian King Sannerherib in the Ⅱ Kings and Isaiah is more emphasize than Ⅱ Chronicles. The last one is that the contents and affairs of the reformation in the Ⅱ Chroniclers is more emphasize than the Ⅱ Kings.
In Isaiah, moreover, it doesn't mention the reformation affairs of Hezekiah which is commonly written in the two historical books.
The Hezekiah's prayer on the sickbed which is only in Isaiah 38:10-20 follows the long material about war which is in Isaiah and Ⅱ kings.
As we can see, these are the differences of the emphasis between the two texts. The reason why these differences occur is that they have the different periods and backgrounds in historically and socially.
The main purpose of this article is to suggest the well-balanced way of reading and understanding the Bible which have different views of the same historical fact.
By comparing the texts which show us different view points to the same historical facts, we can figure out the similarities and dissimilarities of the texts and understand the full meaning of each text and finally draw new interpretations.
All these strategies allow us to broaden the understanding of the bible.
