Setting up a fiction as one of texts, and after investigating useful concepts in the text science, I analyzed and interpreted the fiction text making use of Van Dike's theory as a frame of fiction analysis.
I tried to explain summary process by applying macro rule ranging from the original text to the highest macrostructure and investigated most important elements of the fiction and other additional elements and found the topic, the whole macrostructure through making the sequential macrostructure.
Next I investigated concepts of superstructure and tried to find narrative structure of the concrete fiction useful in fiction analysis. To be concrete, I analyzed each event as conflict and solution by dividing the whole story into seven episodes and investigated how each episode was interpreted in a special structural frame, and emotional response of readers after their reading of a work.
After investigating this study, I could make profitable application of macrostructure rule of Van Dike in analyzing a literary work. I could distinguish between important details of the whole plot and additional details. I think the structure as a whole allows us to find topic based on works so that we might not find topic without basing on text.
However, I couldn't apply the macrostructure of Van Dike as it stands to analysis and interpretation of 'Gamja' as it is literary work. I supplemented implied meaning by inferring clue of context.
Conflict and solution don't always occur in each episode when it comes to applying the theory of Van Dike to analysis of narrative work. Some episodes don't have conflict and solution, and a structural frame happen to appear through several episodes.
However when narrative structure if Van Dike is used as a frame of fiction analysis, it can be so useful for it allows us to deal carefully with character, event, and categories of structural frame. The analysis frame of text science used in this study may be very useful in interpretation of other literary work if get transformed and used.
