This paper traces how the Oxford English Dictionary(henceforth, OED) became the ultimate authority on the English language as well as a history of English speech and thought from its infancy to the present day.
During the 1970s and 1980s, a four-volume supplement updated the original thirteen volumes; this supplement was then integrated with the original volumes to form a second edition of the OED. More recently, the OED has been made available on CD-ROM.
The influence of this great publication has been far-reaching. Its authority was recognised from the appearance of the first installment with a wealth of exact data. More important, however, it has profoundly influenced the attitude of many people toward language, and toward the English language in particular.
