What has been Japanese literature for Korean readers? A few Korean writers adopted modern Japanese Literature for modernization of Korean Literature more than half a century. At the first stage, Japanese novels had been translated or adapted into Korean from the late 19th century to 1910. But during the Japanese occupation of Korea, modern Japanese literature was normative one no longer a foreign literature. There was very few translations of Japanese novel and poetry in Japanese colonial rule, because most educated readers read Japanese literature in the original.
After Syngman Rhee's stern anti-Japanese policies which prohibited the introduction of Japanese culture, Japanese novels translated into Korean appeared again in bookstores and gained popularity in 1960th. Many literary critics and writers who had sense of crisis due to the advance of Japanese novels were outspokenly critical of unethical characteristic of it. It is a matter of consequence that details of criticism of Japanese literature have been applied in the opposite direction to constitute ideal types of Korean post-liberation literature.
