We demonstrate in this paper that three anaphors in Korean are basically different in their semantic functions. In particular, we demonstrate, following Reinhart (1983, 1993), Higginbotham (1992), Heim (1992), Richards (1997), and Safir (2004), that Korean anaphors are closely related to coreference, variable binding, and common reference in their binding behavior. An advantage of our analysis is that it can make a semantic distinction among variable binding, coreference, and common reference for any NPs. Besides the difference between coreference and binding observed in this paper, anaphors can be analyzed by the relationship with common reference, coreference, and variable binding. When two arguments of a predicate are coindexed, that predicate is reflexive. However, caki cannot bear the ability to reflexivize a predicate without the speaker's intention. That caki is interpreted as associated with its linguistic antecedent implies that it is linked to its antecedent through the occurrence of common reference. In contrast, the discriminating use signaled by the speaker's intention does not hold for heavy reflexives such as ku-casin and caki-casin. This leads us to hypothesize that they can be interpreted as related to their antecedents either by coreference or by binding without common reference arising from the speaker's intention.
