The interpretations of the Michal story have shown a striking contrast in assessing the character Michal. Most of the conventional readers find fault with her from a negative perspective while feminist readers view her from a positive one. There is, though, a tacit assertion which can be shared by both sides: interpretation should be based upon what the text really says. This paper, however, suggests that such an assertion which seem to be self-evident is not easy to sustain. For all we know as what a text really says is no more than what is written in the text which is ambiguous in itself.
Textual ambiguity is revealed not just in inconsistent descriptions of Michal by the narrator: active as the wife of David and inactive as the wife of Paltiel, saving David and reproaching him. Even the Michal in the same scene is not easy to assess decisively; while helping David to escape, for instance, she is a wife only sacrificing herself for her husband without any reward and still has to remain a daughter of Saul. After all, it is the reader's interest and value that defines a boundary of textual concern, making possible the judgement on all textual elements including characters.
