Since 1970s some scholars, called minimalist or revisionists, challenged against the traditional view. They argued that the main events of early Israel described in Old Testament were only myth or fiction. According to their arguments David is a fictitious character. Accepting these recent views, I examined descriptions of Old Testament on David and his Empire. The result of the survey follows.
The famous story of victory of David over Goliath is a fiction. According to 1 Samuel 16:1-13 David was an armor-bearers of Saul before the fight. Furthermore the description that David brought the Philistine’s head to Jerusalem is an outcome of an anachronism. And according to 2 Samuel 21:19 the hero who killed Goliath is not David but Elhanan. Considering these contradictions we could not argue that the famous tale of David is a real event.
The excavations which carried out by archaeologists since 1980s give means to measure the historicity of the Empire of David. According to the results of excavations the size of Jerusalem was very small and the population of the city was under 10,000. So the vast empire which was described in Old Testament was not a historical fact.
To sum up there are some serious contradictions in the descriptions of Old Testament on David and his Empire. Probably the cause of these contradictions was that the description of Old Testament was an product of later generations who wanted to use the tale of David for their interest.
