This article is devoted to the development of different directions in the Soviet literature and political, economical and social factors that affected this process.
In the twenties of the 20th century there was a complicated political situation in Russia: the Civil War, the War Communism (1917-1921), the New Economic Policy(NEP)(1921-1928), the building of Socialism. In 1921-1928 the literature was flourishing in Russia, especially satire prose. Different authors depicted the Great October Socialist Revolution in their works. According to Zamyatin, the Great October Socialist Revolution has eliminated the culture of mankind, become an anti - Utopia and lead to totalitarianism. Platonov considered the building of Socialism to be an Utopia, phantasy that could never be materialized in reality. Bulgakov thought that Socialism was an artificial and very dangerous phenomenon. Olesha defined an opposition between human sensitive perception and cold reason of a machine. Zoshchenko's works, in which he vividly depicted the stratification of the society. the mode of life of an average man, made him famous all over the world.
Such writers as Kataev, Il'f and Petrov wrote about the socialistic reality but at the same time made fun of many negative phenomena of the society.
They all wrote in extravagantly fantastic and grotesque terms in order to intensify the satirical effect. The all seemed to have nothing in common with Socialism. In 1928 with the introduction of censorship in Russia there was the end of the Soviet satirical literature. A new direction - socialist realism - appeared in the Soviet literature. At that period of time many writers emigrated, others changed their manner of writing or wrote mediocre book. The majority of these very writers were strongly criticised by the Soviet Government, became outcasts or had even been killed. The satirical literature was declared invalid.
Nowadays, the satirical literature is gaining its popularity again. It has enriched the modern literature and its role in the Russian literature has been revalued.
