The purpose of this paper is to examine how the image of South Koreans is ideologically constructed in an American news magazine and how such an image, constructed in the source text, is reconstructed in translation by a South Korean news media firm. Based on the Critical Discourse Analysis (Fairclough 1989, 1992) framework, this paper analyzes evaluations of South Koreans in two Newsweek International articles that deal with anti-Americanism in South Korea and their translations in Newsweek Korea. Evaluation in this paper refers to an expression of a writer's attitude about entities or propositions in terms of the kind of values, e.g., positive or negative, the writer attributes to them (Van Dijk 1998b; Thompson and Hunston 2000)). An analysis of the source text articles shows that diverse evaluative strategies are used to polarize South Korea and the U.S. and to present the "We" group in favorable light and the "They" group unfavorably. An examination of translated articles, on the other hand, suggests that negative evaluations of South Koreans in the source texts are systematically neutralized and bleached in translation to construct an image that is relatively less negative than that in the source text. Such unidirectionality in the shifts in meaning as a result of translation suggests that choices made in the process of producing a translated text in a news media firm will involve readership construction.
