The purpose of this study is to analyze features and problems of sustainable development in Kyeongbuk Province, and to establish future policy directions. Sustainable development requires appropriate degree of development and preservation of the natural environment for the future generation to enjoy earth environments without any degradation of their life qualities. To achieve such goals, in practicing development, we have to follow such principles as planning/continuity, equality, prevention/stability, and pollutant's responsibility. If analyzing sustainable developments in Kyeongbuk Province with those principles as criteria, problems and future policy directions are summarized as follows. First, in light of planning and continuity, problems are unplanned actions, lack of feedback, and lack of discussions with neighboring cities. To alleviate such problems, it is necessary to implement well planned and regional level development plans, to coordinate projects, and to evaluate implemented projects. Second, in light of equality, problems are reduced preservation areas because of unrestricted land use management practices To solve such problem more restrict land use management system is needed. Third, in light of stability and preparation, problem is the non-effectiveness of policies. To alleviate such problem, a systematic environmental policy implementation system is needed. Fourth, in light of pollutant's responsibility, problems lies in the lack of environmental management practices because non-equiped professional man power, lack of organization, and lack of fund. To solve such problems, it is necessary to increase professional man power and financial resources.
