This thesis dealt with the standing stone Buddha statue in Maesanri. Many standing stone Buddha Statues which are scattered in Gyeonggi(京畿道) and Chungcheung Province(忠淸道) are very important to study Buddhism and Buddha Ststues in Koryo(高麗) dynasty. Maesanri Buddha statue is one of the most important Buddha statue to study Koryo(高麗) Buddha statues.
Until now, Many scholars have considered the Maesanri Buddha Statue was made in the latter half of Koryo, (高麗) However they didn't show proofs about the date. This thesis tried to prove when the Standing Stone Buddha Statue in Maesanri was made. Also, this thesis tried to explain who and why made the Maesanri Buddha Statue.
To show when the Maesanri Buddha was made Many Historical records wear researched. Also the Maesanri Buddha statue was compared its style with the Buddha Statues of Temple Gaete(開泰寺) and Temple Gwanchok(灌燭寺).
In 960, Kwangjeong(光宗) made new ruling system. In 1065 Liao dynasty sent King' s hat to Koryo. This historical fact shows that Koryo dynasty had used Emperor' s hat until 1065. The Concept about Emperor influenced to Koryo people. They thought that their king is a Emperor. These thinking produced many effects on the Buddha Statues style. The Maesanri Buddha statue is the one of those Buddha statues.
This thesis proved that the Standing stone Buddha ststue which are located at Maesanri was made by Kwangjeong. He also made the standing stone buddha statue in the Temple Gwanchok.(灌燭寺) The Maesanri and the Temple Gwanchok Standing stone Buddha can be explained that why people made those Buddha statues. It is not so difficult because the Gwanchok Standing stone Buddha statue have the historical record about itself. In case of the Maesanri Standing stone Buddha statue, it is a little bit difficult to find that who and why had built that Buddha statue, However this thesis tried to explain those questions. It is belived that Maesanri Buddha statues was made by King Kwanjong(光宗). The purpose of making the Buddha statue was to show his will which was building up strong Emperor's power.
