The problems of interdisciplinary research between folklore and psychoanalysis on the study of a culture were discussed in this art icle.
Culture is no single, monotonous unit, but a multidimensional, complexed and comprehensive one. Therefore, the full understanding of a given culture is impossible without multidisciplinary approach. In the study of a culture, folklore anld psychoanalysis have their own imitations.
Psychoanalysis has two fields of research: one is the original field to study inner structure and conflict of individual psyche, another is the applied field to study deep psychological problems of a culture and collective psyche. These two fields of research are dependent each other. Psychoanalysis is, however, lacking in experience and knowledge of understanding a cultural context. On the other hand, folklore has relatively poor understanding of unconscious material, psychopathology and personality formation which concerned to cultural context. These limitations in method of research should be compensated each other by way of cooperation.
Folklore’s contribution to psychoanalysis is considered as follow ings; a) to give information on the concept and attitude of people toward normality, abnormality and disease, b) to evaluate pathogenic cultural factors for understanding of psychodynamism of individual or cultural context, c) to give information on the primitive way of relaxing or treating individual or cultural conflicts, d) to present other cultural mate rials which necessary for psychoanalysis to study the cultural problems.
Psychoanalysis contribution to folklore is as followings: a) to present some results of analysis of cultural tonflicts through case study, b) to interpret psychopathology, psychodynamism, relation of cultural factor and personality formation of individual person or collective being, c) to interpret the symbolic function of cultural materials.
The author discussed also the common interesting fields: problems of cultural relativism, cultural specificity, pathogenic cultural factors, cultural coloring and symbolic function.
Finally the desirable attitude and ability of each researcher were discussed with reference of concept of multidisciplinary, cross-cultural orientation.
