Through a psychoanalytic interpretation of the heroic myths of Korea, China,
and Japan, one can perceive the similarities and differences of the ethos of the three countries. The important thing is to find the appropriate structure and notion in analyzing the heroic myths. The notions of Sigmund Freud, Jaques Lacan, Melanie Klein, and Donald Winnicott are useful in showing the differences between the development of heroic minds and ethnic unconsciousness, whereas C. G. Jung’notions are useful in showing the similarities. Therefore, if these notions are applied adequately, the development of heroic minds in myths and the meanings of unconscious actions can be understood in depth.
Especially, the rite of passage which is imposed on the hero in myths implies not only the type of ability the hero will demonstrate and the task the hero will achieve, but also the underlying complexes and wishes of the people. Therefore, analyzing what types of rites of passage exist is a key to interpreting the similarities and differences of the ethnic unconsciousness of Korea, China, and Japan. A power complex towards the authority (which may be the father or the big country) and the establishment of self-respect in Zumong’ite of passage, overcoming atrophied aggressiveness and the conflicts of a plural society in Soon's rite of passage, and anxiety of persecution and the Oedipus desire in Okuninusi’case were the main complexes of ethnic unconsciousness.
All heros have the Oedipus complex, but the mode of expression varies due to the difference in group consciousness (culture) of each ethnic group. In the case of Soon and the Chinese, who thoroughly repressed and sublimated the Oedipus complex by stressing the importance of the filial duty, only the community's moral persona is emphasized and one’personal life is repressed. On the contrary, in the case of Okuninusi and the Japanese, who tied the hair of Ssano (a man of authority) to a pole and stole his treasures and his daughter, one can see that the desire to fulfill and to overcome the Oedipus complex is expressed at the same rime. In comparison, in the Zumong myth, one can see that he tries to become a more powerful being than his father, but instead of coupling with a new woman he shows affection towards his mother. This shows the fixation of the Oedipus complex.
