The purpose of this study is to investigate the Korean traditional music appreciation in music education by traditional children’s songs and fork songs through an imagination theory in elementary schools. Imagination of students plays an integral role in elementary schools.
This investigation was focused on several aspects : imagination theory in music, Korean traditional appreciation education, traditional children’s songs and fork songs. Major points for this study are as follows : (1) The conception of imagination and feature of imagination in young students (2) The educational importance of imagination (3) The musical imagination through appreciation activities (4) The importance of Korean traditional appreciation in music education (5) The Korean traditional appreciation in music education for improvement of imagination.
This study showed that students may expand their imagination based on experiences of Korean traditional appreciation activities by traditional children’s songs and fork songs.
Generally, the Korean traditional music-related activities ate the basis of various experience activities so that the students may expand the understanding of Korean traditional music by practicing Korean traditional music appreciation activities given in the schools.
In addition, music appreciation activities in elementary schools are to extend the musical imagination of young students through musical experiences, and the Korean traditional music education of elementary schools must give various musical appreciation opportunities allowing an individual student to develop his/her musical imagination to the utmost extent. In this study, I supposed that the Korean traditional music appreciation education activities by traditional children’s songs and fork songs can improve imagination of elementary school pupils, and it is also needed to study the educational effects of imagination in other education activities.
