The music curriculum emphasizes the comprehension of music elements and concepts and the understanding of musical pieces' characteristics. However, in the music appreciation class of the secondary school sites, instead of comprehending music elements and concepts, students mostly appreciate musical pieces based on textbooks' explanations about the musical pieces' era and the composers, and then they tell their impression, which is rather abstract activities. Therefore, it is difficult for students to understand musical characteristics, and actually they can't acquire the method of appreciating musical pieces. This study did survey about the current situation of music appreciation class and opinions, and then the result was analyzed. The methods for effective music appreciation education through the discussion on the analysis result are presented as follows. First, the types and contents of appreciated musical pieces presented in the textbooks should be improved, so that learning music elements, western music history and composers can be balanced. Second, musical pieces presented in textbooks should be small scale rather than vast scope, so that students can have interest and teachers can progress class smoothly. Third, music teachers should recognize the problems of current music appreciation education on their own, and various training and aid programs should be accompanied. Fourth, teaching and learning materials and teaching methods should be developed and presented to improve teachers' music appreciation class methods, and various communities where teachers can share their methods should be provided.
