The purpose of this study is to investigate developmental plan of instrumental music education about the Korean traditional music in elementary schools. Instrumental activity of students plays an integral role in elementary schools.
This investigation was focused on several aspects: traditional method of instrumental music education about the Korean Traditional Music, a teaching method of the Haegum, a music curriculum of elementary school.
Major points for this study are as follows: (1) The conception of traditional teaching method of instrumental music education about the Korean traditional music in elementary schools. (2) The educational importance of the Haegum. (3) The instruction of instrumental music education about the Haegum in elementary schools. (4) The importance of instrumental music education about the Korean Traditional Music. (5) The instrumental music activity about the Korean traditional music in music education.
The Haegum is one of the most popular Korean Traditional Music instruments. The importance of the Haegum is increasing, because it is a very essential component of Korean traditional orchestra. The elementary school music textbooks for the seventh curriculum are analysed for this study. As a result of this, it is recognised that the instrumental education for the Korean Traditional Music is only considered for Danso and Janggo in elementary school music curriculum.
Therefore, as a way of diversification to instrumental education in the Korean traditional music, an instruction method of the Haegum for the elementary school students is suggested.
Generally, the Korean traditional music-related activities are the basis of various experience activities so that the students may expand the understanding of Korean traditional music by practicing Korean traditional music activities given in the schools.
In addition, instrumental music activities in elementary schools are to extend the musical imagination of young students through musical experiences, and the Korean traditional music education of elementary schools must give various musical opportunities allowing an individual student to develop his/her musical imagination to the utmost extent.
To succeed and develop the traditional culture of a country, it is very important to learn the traditional instruments. Consequently, this study has valuable meaning.
