Lullaby singing in a labor of nursery to sleep baby belongs to the ancient style among the folk songs and is limited to singing method and space. So, lullaby is a type of the folk song to dearly consider regional properties because of a low variation of music factors. In this paper, I researched into the general and regional properties of lullaby through musical characteristics such as rhythmic patterns, making lyrics, singing tempos, vocal registers, and modes.
General characteristic of lullaby is typical making lyrics, senseful singing tempos and registers, and particular coda.
The making lyrics which has two notes per one line are usually inclining to have an accent in the every first beat. Also, the singing tempo is a little bit slower than breathing tempo of men which is M.M. 64~80. The register of the song is mainly 7th or perfect 9th.
In addition to being generally ended with the lowest note or perfect 4th in the mode, coda mainly ascend in the second note of the end when being persisted and ended with same sound and descend the major second note at the end of the music.
The characteristics of the regional differentiation are rhythmic patterns, modes, singing tempos, and sound registers.
The rhythmic patterns are divided into triple, duple, and mixed patterns. The triple patterns are spread in all over the country, but the duple and mixed patterns are only restricted to Menari tori and Jeju region.
The modes are divided into Menari tori, Yukjabaegi tori, Re mode, Do mode, and La mode in lullaby. Menari tori could be found in Chungcheong province as well as Gangwon and Gyeongsang provinces. Yukjabaegi tori is restricted to Jeonnam province and some regions of Jeonbuk and Chungnam provinces. In Jeju, there are uniquely used Re mode and La mode. Do mode partially used in some regions of Jeju, Chungbuk, and Jeonbuk provinces.
The singing tempos are various by region. Gangwon region’s tempo is the slowest and Gyeongsang region’s is faster than other regions. Also, Jeju region’s vocal register is narrower than other regions.
In aspect of music, lullaby has similar points in same types of music and distinctive points according to the region. Distinctive characteristics of lullaby studied by regional distribution give us clues related to regional specificity of Korean folk song which is property of regional folk song such as rhythmic patterns, singing tempos, vocal registers and modes.
