Since Chungcheong province is located in middle of Korea, the characteristics of its culture has been attributed to composition of various cultures. In this study I address the question that whether or not this explanation can be also applied to the musical aspect of the province. It will be studied if the folksongs of this province indicates a mere mixture of cultures of other areas. I will also look for the evidence that its own tori(musical texture; mode) of Chungcheong province exists. For this purpose, I have transcribed and analyzed the rice field weeding folksongs contained in 『MBC HanKuk Minyo Daejeon (the compilation of Korean folksongs)』.
The following characteristics of the folksongs of Chungcheong province have been noted.
1. In the area of Chungcheongnam province bordering on Gyeunggi province, such as Tae-an, Seo-san, Dang-jin, A-san, On-yang, and Cheon-an, the rice field weeding folksongs are sung in accordance with Kyeong-tori(mi'-re'-do'-la-sol, sol mode) or Nambu(southern) Kyeong-tori(mi'-re'-do'-sol, do mode).
2. In the middle of Chungcheongnam province, such as Hong-sung, Ye-san, Cheong-yang, Gong-ju, Yeon-gi, and Dae-jeon, Menari-tori(re'-do'-la-sol-mi, la mode) is dominant, but the combination of Menari-tori and Yukjabaegi-tori(mi'-re'-do'-si-la-sol-mi) is also common.
3. In the area of Chungcheongnam province bordering on Jeonlabuk province, such as Seo-cheon, Bu-yeo, Non-san, and Geum-san, Yukjabaegi-tori(re'-do'-si-la-mi, la mode) is found more frequently compared to other areas.
4. In Chungcheongbuk province Menari-tori is widely distributed compared to Chungcheongnam province.
5. Only in the area of Chungcheongbuk province bordering on Chungcheongnam province, the combination of Menari-tori and Yukjabaegi-tori is found, and Eosayong-tori (la-sol-mi-re-do, do mode) can be occasionally found.
In Chongcheongbuk province it can be said that Menari-tori is dominant. However, there are many tori in Chungcheongnam province. This fact requires an interpretation. I propose a hypothesis that the basis of Chungcheong-tori is "perfect fourth+ minor third", and this has made it possible to mix various tori like Kyeong-tori, Nambu Kyeong-tori, Menari-tori, and Yukjabaegi-tori in Chungcheong province. However, this hypothesis is based only on the rice field weeding folksongs. It is necessary to examine others kinds of folksongs as well to better understand the musical characteristics of the folksongs of Chungcheong province.
