This paper deals with the musical characteristics of farming songs in Kyunggi-do area compiled in a collection of MBC folk songs.
First, three types of singing are in practice-alternative singing between two groups, singing in five groups, an alternation between a solo and a chorus. Singing in five groups is found only in the songs titled "Menari'', a farming song of Pochon area.
Second, the tonal range of rice planting songs and field weeding songs is generally no ider than an octave. Although tonal register shows a wide range from G to a', G and a' are used in limited areas and register from d to e' b is employed in a majority of songs in this region.
Third, four types of melodic structure of rice planting songs and field weeding songs appears. Songs beginning in high pitch descending to lower tones, songs maintaining the same pitch for some duration, songs beginning in low pitch ascending to higher pitch, songs beginning in high pitch are those. In northern Kyunggi-do, the second or the third type are more prevailing than others and in southern Kyunggi-do, the first type is prominent.
Fourth, five types of tonal structures are found. Kyung-tori, Ban Kyung-tori, Menari-tori, Sushimga-tori and Nanbongga-tori are the five types and Menari-tori is the most prevalent. Sushimga-tori and Nanbongga-tori is used in a mixture with Kyung-tori. Three types of tonal structures other than Kyung-tori and Menari-tori and most of Kyung-tori are distributed in Paju area. While rice farming songs in Kyunggi-do region is in Menari-tory in overall, only farming songs of Paju area do not contain Menari-tori but shows other various tonal structure such as Kyung-tori, Ban Kyung-tori, Sushimga-tori and Nanbongga-tori.
Fifth, singing in alternation between a solo and a chorus is found both in southern and northern Kyunggi-do in such farming songs as "Banga Karyong" and "Kin Sori". More songs from southern Kyunggi-do are sung in such a style - Dan huri, etc. Five types of tonal structures - Kyung-tori, Ban Kyung-tori, Menari-tori, Sushimga-tori, and Nanbongga-tori. Most areas in this region have songs in Menari-tori, Kyung-tori is mainly distributed in Paju area. Farming songs in Ban Kyung-tori, Sushimga-tori and Nanbongga-tori are found in some areas.
