Susimga is regarded as the representative folk song in the Western region. It presents the typical musical idiom of folk songs in the region that the musical idiom in the Western region is called Susimga tori. Susimga is not sung by the common people but by the professional folk singers. The professional singers and female entertainers have performed this song on stage and have recorded this song since the early 20th century. In this paper, I examine the performers and the musical characteristics of this song in order to understand the musical culture of the folk song in the Western region.
Susimga became famous due to the professional itinerant musicians, called naltangpae, from Pyeongyang in the 1900s. They performed on various stages and trained female entertainers of kwvnbeon training school who later became the major performers of Susimga on stage. Since these musicians were excellent various musical genres, their repertoire, include Susimga, became a stylish song which required competent musical ability.
Although the inner rhythm of Susimga is triple meter composed of three bears, its practical rhythm is reduced to duple meter or extended to quadruple meter. The lengths of three movements are not fixed; they differ in accordance to the singer. The tonal structure of Susimga is pentatonic of re-mi-sol-la-do'. Among them, re-la-do are more important than other tones. The tonal center is la whose wide vibrato requires a well-trained musical ability.
