There were very peculier officials named Naesi in Kory? Dynasty, and people guessed they are often called by many other names like Geunsi(近侍) or Geunsin(近臣). But as a result of analysing the examples of Geunsi and Geunsin, they are turned out to be the total names for the officials who served the king closely. So we need to be very careful and analytic when we use the materials of Geunsi or Geunsin on the study of Naesi. On the other hand, Naekwan(內官), Naewhan(內宦), Seongkwan(星官) and Seongwhan(星宦) are considered as another names of Naesi.
The structure of Naesi in Kory? Dynasty was divided into three types, Jokwannaesi(朝官內侍), Seorinaesi(胥吏內侍) and Sanjiknaesi(散職內侍) under the office called Naesiwon(內侍院). Among these groups, Jokwannaesi was the core of Naesiwon. The substance of Jokwannaesi was proved as dispatched official who actually worked for Naesiwon in palace though he belonged to the offices of government. And Seorinaesi who was in charge of practical affairs of Naesiwon was also dispatched official as well as Jokwannaesi. Sanjiknaesi who held Dongjeongjik(同正職) was supplemented with people who first entered government office through Kwageo(科擧) or Eumseo(蔭敍). In the end, all of Munmukwan(文武官), Seori and officials through Kwageo or Eumseo could be Naesi, but we need to understand that their characters, status and roles were different from one another.
The size of Naesi in Kory? Dynasty had difference according to its period. In case of Jokwannaesi, its number came up to 20 to 70. Because of the king's desire to strengthen his power, the number of Naesi was generally increased from King Munjong(文宗) to Military regime. And the office for Naesi was instolled in the early times of foundation of Kory? as well as Naesi.
