The purpose of this study is to investigate educational principles that are presented in the book of Matthew, 25: 14-30. The study presents three educational principles which are criterion referenced evaluation, individualization, reward and punishment in the parables of the talents. First this work did an exegetical survey on the given passages. Then it reviewed the literature on the meaning of the talents, parables and their educational principles. This includes definitions, concepts and the educational purpose of the parables.
The educational principles of Jesus were interpreted based on Matthew 25: 14-30. This study has shown from the interpretation of the text that there are three different educational principles. The criterion referenced evaluation educational principle is explored first. Second is individualization of educational concepts. Third reward and punishment is developed as an valid educational principle.
According to this parable, comparatively each individual is eligible for reward. According to this passage God evaluated all of the individuals the same regardless of the number of talents given to the men. God evaluated according to individual talents and does not compare the different talents. Gods evaluation is developed according to the individuals talents rather than a comparative evaluation. God's evaluation is given fairly.
This passage also gives credence to individualization of educational concepts. Each person has different talents. When teaching students we must analyze the level of their abilities, and understand that God created each person unique with various talents. Christian educators need to understand the individual needs of the students based on the wisdom of this parable taught by Jesus. Students with physical or intellectual disabilities also have many different talents to be pursued and developed with the guidance of the teacher.
In the third educational concept reward and punishment is displayed in this passage. God has given talents to His people and expects them to multiply their talents for His kingdom. According to God's evaluation it doesn't matter how many talents each person had, but that they multiplied them for His glory. To the one who buried his talent God was angry and punished him. Christian education has as its task the awesome responsibility to encourage the multiplication of talents given to each person. Even with one talent God expects faithfulness. God doesn't expect more than the person has. The ultimate concept even in reward and punishment is that God is fair.
Finally, we are mandated to teach according to these educational principles of Jesus. Jesus is our example for developing educational principles according the individual abilities.
