Jung-Ryu(靜流), Dr. Sang-geun Lee is a well-known pastor, theologian, and exegetist. He is the author of many books from different fields, and has accomplished a great deal for the Korean Church as well as for its Society?making friends with people from all walks of life. His amazing efforts in the study of theology were rewarded with the Korean Church’s growth. Though his work as a pastor and a preacher had considerable influence on the growth of the Korean Church, his commentaries on the Old and New Testament and their Apocrypha became a stepping stone in Korean theological circles.
Jung-Ryu(靜流) studied theology and served local churches in terribly painful time in Korea which endured Japanese imperialism, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the dissolution of the Korean Church. The Old Testament scholar Young-jin Min said that these memorable works by Pastor Sang-geun Lee had not been completed in his time but have to become actively used commentaries by going through editions. Taken as a whole, his commentary on the Gospel of Matthew can be read as a guide to help preachers prepare their sermons.
Pastor Sang-geun Lee’s commentary on the Gospel of Matthew cast a long shadow. Whether or not he realized it, his commentary is deeply related to Matthew’s attempt to see Jesus as Messiah prophesied in the Old Testament and his events as accomplishments of the Old Testament. Matthew 1:1-17 is a key paragraph in understanding Pastor Sang-geun Lee’s theology in the commentary on the Gospel of Matthew. Jung-Ryu(靜流) interprets the paragraph in an evangelical and church-centered view, the foundation of Jung-Ryu theology. Such an interpretive mode is derived from Matthew’s understanding of the Messiah and from Jung-Ryu’s emphasis on early Church theology and the heritage of its faith.
From the time of the early Church, Christology has held an unchallenged position in Christians’ kerygma. Jung-Ryu’s sermons continue in this tradition of Christology. Jung-Ryu defines the Old Testament as “prophesy, preparation, and shadow” in his sermon, “Seeing His Cross.” In this way, the centrality of Jesus Christ in the Old and New Testament becomes the core of Christology in Jung-Ryu’s commentary on Matthew 1:1-17.
