Calvin's reformation was not just confined to the religious sphere but concerned with learning and education as well. It could give the new concept on the relation of religion and education. It was a significant source of the cultural force which Calvinism has exerted in the modern era.
This thesis try to iluminate Calvin's Genevan reformation in theperspective of education. His educational activity can be traced in two ways. One is church education in its narrow sense, which consist of sermon in the worship service,the Bible expositionin weekdays, Sunday school teaching, and catechistic education. The other is what is done through the Geneva Academy which he found with purpose to bring up not only pastors for church but also civil leaders of Christian society, equipped with learned piety.
This study seeks to identifythe edcuational inclination in Calvin's idea and pradtice, and particularly in his thought on the church related school system which was embodied in Geneva Academy. We can not overlook the influnce of and interaction withcontemporary humanist educators with Calvin, especially Mathurin Cordier and Jacob Strum.We can find Calvin's humanistlike belief in the value and utility of education was from the educational experience of himself. One was from his early education in College de Marche, and the other was from his exile in Strasbourg. But the humanist stream in his thought in education as well as theology was never contradictory with his theologicalor doctrinal concept. Because humanist factor was functioning in his thought and ministry as anintellectual solvent.
