The purpose of this article is to research Calvin’s thoughts on community based on his own writings, especially on his predications, commentaries and Institute. Calvin has been wrongly known as a progenitor of modern capitalism since the publication of Max Weber’s book, The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism. It is also suspected that he is a main instigator of individualism, exclusivism and separatism that cause human’s inner isolation under the predestination of “dreadful decision of God”. However, Calvin made his endeavor to found the Community of Geneva where the poor and the alienated also could live together. It is impossible to ignore Calvin’s contribution to Geneva’s peace and development of that era. Calvin’s activities in Geneva for the foundation of community in the true sense of it, were performed in the diverse domains of society, politics, economics etc., but he spent most of preaching, teaching and writing, essentially as spiritual leader of the church. His activities and practices for the community were not emerged eventually, independently or separately but a expression of dressed thought in his spirit. That is, a thought of community gives the base and consistency to such activities, so that it becomes a kind of principle to found a community. Therefore, if we understand and learn his thoughts on community, we can obtain an insight for Korean society that also needs to reestablish a community that has been destroyed by neo-liberalistic capitalism.
