This study was going to make clear about meaning of the theory of ‘free verse’ which appeared through the contemporary cultural context in early 1920’s.
In this study first analyzed the theory of ‘free verse’ and lighted up whether these times poets were accepting ‘free verse’ in what kind of concept and a geound. Therefore we were able to know that they used a term called ‘free verse’ in order to designate a special form of a French symbolism poem. And they are not to have accepted that it must be pursued ‘free verse’ with itself. Because it was necessary, they accepted it on the process that found an ethnic form. Therefore a theoretical peculiarity occurred in structure of the theory of ‘free verse’ in this process. Because an ethnic personality was connected to a personality of an artist without a reason, the blank occurred.
We was able to make clear about the reason that a problem called ethnic personality was able to coexist with a personality in structure of the theory of ‘free verse’ through the contemporary cultural context. The culture meant a civilization in a cultural context of these times. And these times literature was the essence of culture. These times literature was recognized with symbol of a civilization or itself. Therefore, it was to mean ethnic civilization to have had literature. That an ethnic personality was able to be connected to a personality of an artist in this theory naturally is that these context who is cultural at that time was existing.
By the way, this culture theories were not to have especially appeared early in 1920’s. It was already appearing with culture theory of 1910’s. Lee Kwang-Su was already recognizing literature to be a symbol of a civilization in 1910’s. If Lee Kwang-Su emphasized an ethnic personality more, the new writers emphasized a personality of an artist more. If there was a difference, it is just this. However, they agreed on the thought that literature was a symbol of a civilization.
