This paper is to introduce Gasa (an old form of Korean verse) called “The Hangul verse pining for her old flame at Chwiwol arbor of Mountain Wolbong.” Bibliographical notes and annotations have been made.
The Gasa is a part of Jangphyeongajip (anthology of long verse) in Gyujanggak, Seoul National University. The writer of this verse which is assumed to have written in 1862 or 1922, is anonymous. Its characteristics is that the first syllable in each line was written in the order of Banjeol (a paradigm of the Korean alphabet arranged as a syllabary)
Even though the theme of the verse was about heart of pining for the main character's sweetheart, the contents were not coherent by limitations requiring the order of Banjeol in each line.
From the perspective of Korean linguistics, this verse has its own value in using Banjeol. From the perspective of history of Korean literature, this verse is also significant in showing changes in verses in transitions to modern age.
